Bill Saltzman - May He Rest in Peace...

My name is Bill Fuentes, and in 1975, Bill Saltzman became a father figure to me, and today, and for years to come, my heart will be broken that he will no longer be here with us.

Bill Saltzman introduced me to all of you beginning in 1976, and he always encouraged me to follow my dreams.... He made one of my dreams come true when at the tender age of 16, he was my partner in the 1976 Baja 500 where we finished 7th Overall. Later, Bill sponsored fellow Checker Bryan Bennett(RIP)and I in some other SCORE events, and I will never forget his loyalty and devotion.

Bill Saltman gave unselfishly. If you had a problem with your bike, he would desperately try to help you make it to the starting line.

Bill never left the desert if he knew someone was stuck out there, somewhere....
It did not matter whether it was a Checker, a member from another Club; Bill Saltzman held steadfastly to a simple principle:

"Never leave a brother stranded...."

I will never, ever forget Bill Saltzman. While reputations precede us, what matters is character and integrity. If Bill finished ahead of you at a race when you knew he should have been behind you; forgive whatever injustice you feel may have suffered. Was he not there when you really needed him?

He was for me....

My prayer is that each and every one of you will take some time out to reflect upon those who have encouraged your growth and development over the years, and give them a call. While it may be humbling, believe me; "it's worth it!" Bill Saltzman is in Heaven today knowing how much he influenced my life in such a positive manner, and like he; I'm at peace.....

I want to thank the Checkers for allowing me to be of service between 1985 through 1993 in various capacities; from Pit Captain, then Secretary, Vice President, and ultimately President.... We held three (3) great National Hare & Hound events between 1991 and 1993! Remember how each event was televised by "MotoWorld"?

I have so many proud and happy memories of how things all came together....

You are such a fine organization of talented riders and I am honored to have been a part of your continued success.

Can't wait to see you guys (and gals...) soon, and please reflect on those who have provided a positive influence in your lives.

Respectfully,

Bill Fuentes

Bill came here from up north to manage the husky store in baldwin park. He wasn,t used to the desert racing and crashed hard and slowed up for a while and gave me a chance to ride ahead of him.He knocked me down in a race at bell mountain and sent me to the hospital. He came to visit with a present but never admitted it was him that did it to me ,only to other people. I never held it against him.We worked together on fork kit's for sail and I fixed his most destroyed bikes.I am priviledged to say that he called me his best friend. I miss him.
